Performance Limitations of an Optical IM-DD Transmission System Due to Polarization Mode Dispersion
نویسندگان
چکیده
An analytical approach is presented to evaluate the impact of polarization mode dispersion on the average bit error rate (BER) performance of a intensity modulated direct detection (IM-DD) optical transmission system considering Maxwellian distribution for the differential group delay (DGD). The results show that the performance of an IM-DD system suffers power penalty of 0.27 dB, 0.45 dB and 2.4 dB corresponding to mean DGD of 20 ps, 35 ps and 40 ps respectively at a BER of 10 operating at a bit rate of 10 Gb/s. Furthermore, at increased values of the mean DGD there occur BER floors above 10 which can not be lowered by further increasing the signal power. It is noticed that BER floors occur at about 2x10, 10 and 10 corresponding to mean DGD of 45 ps, 50 ps and 60 ps respectively at 10Gb/s. The effect of PMD is found to be more detrimental at higher bit rates.

Numerical Simulations of the Long-Haul RZ-DPSK Optical Fibre Transmission System
Return-to-zero differential phase shift keying (RZ-DPSK) is a promising modulation format for the long-haul large capacity optical fibre transmission system, and it demonstrated a superior performance compared to the conventional intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM-DD) system experimentally (Cai et al., 2006; Inoue et al., 2004; Rasmussen et al., 2004). For the IM-DD based long-haul syste...

Data transmission in optical systems and increased transmission distance capacity benefit by using optical amplification wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology. The combination of four waves (FWM) is a non-linear effect in the wavelength division multiplex (WDM), when more than two wavelengths of light in a fiber launch will occur. FWM amount depends on the channel, the channel spaci...
متن کاملPerformance Evaluation of Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation Receivers in Lightwave Systems with Optical Amplifiers
Maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) has been proposed in earlier literature to combat the effects of nonlinear dispersion in intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) optical channels. In this paper, we develop a theory of the bit error rate (BER) of MLSE-based IM/DD receivers operating in the presence of nonlinear dispersion and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise. We focu...

The topic of thesis is “Compensation of Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD)” in Fiber optics communication and its impact on high speed data transmission. The work can be divided into three parts which deals with major aspects of PMD: characteristics, transmission and compensation. Polarization-mode dispersion (PMD), in single-mode optical fibers, is a phenomenon that a limit the bit-rate-distan...
